Safety on Social Media When Researching Panama

Last Updated on September 23, 2025 by Retire in Panama

Many Facebook groups in Panama are just totally toxic. Full of members who do not have your best interest at heart, full of people answering questions who don’t even live here, and full of “trolls .” Trolls are members whose sole purpose is to promote their products.

For example, when you ask for an immigration lawyer’s referral, you get people recommending lawyers. Some of these people are office employees of the lawyer in the group to promote their boss. Or you will get PMs from people you do not know recommending lawyers. This is dangerous.

Recently, Panama’s immigration department sent an official warning out that fake lawyers had infiltrated Social Media groups and scammed foreigners.

We are sad to say that we get calls and emails every week where people are in trouble because of a lousy answer they received on Social Media, and they need help getting out of a situation.

In Boquete, Oscar, Megan & Rod run the Expats in Boquete Facebook group. If Boquete is on your watch list, you should be joining this group. We highly moderate this group to ensure you get correct answers, and we keep the trolls out of this group. We limit commercial advertising. We allow personal advertising relative to rentals, furniture for sale, and things expats need in Boquete. The information you are seeing is relevant to people looking to move to Boquete and people who have arrived here looking for more information. You can join Expats in Boquete HERE.
